HOUSTON -- Andrew Driver and Giles Barnes scored to help the Houston Dynamo beat English Premier League club Stoke City 2-0 on Wednesday night in an exhibition game. Driver opened the scoring in the 11th minute, sending a free kick from 25 yards out right of the middle inside the far post. "It was a big game for the club," Driver said. "Obviously, with a team like Stoke, it is nice to score in a game like that. Its nice to get a win and a goal, but I would rather get that on the weekend (against Chicago in MLS play)." Barnes scored in the 88th minute, taking a pass from Corey Ashe in the left box and sending a shot along the end line from outside the left goalkeepers box and inside the near post. "We created some really good chances in the first half," Houston head coach Dominic Kinnear said. "I thought we defended well. Then it was a bit of a possession game for them, and we were kind of dropping deeper and deeper and had some good possession as well. Giles had a good individual play for the second goal." Stoke City was playing its first game under new manager Mark Hughes. Stoke City will play FC Dallas on Saturday night, and end its three-game tour against the Philadelphia Union on Tuesday night. "From our point of view, this is exactly what we need at this stage of the season and our preparation," Hughes said. "I thought for long periods we showed decent control of the football without really having a cutting edge. "We didnt create enough in the final third. We didnt really retain the ball as well as we hope to do in the future, but for a first game, first test, I thought this was exactly what we needed." Stoke City defender Geoff Cameron, who spent 4 1/2 years in Houston before he moved on to the EPL with Stoke City, said the first game under Hughes was a good opportunity to get back on the field. "Its obviously a preseason game, so we are just rolling with it," said Cameron, a U.S. national team member. "Its a new system, so we are just trying to get the ball down and play. Obviously, everyone was a bit fatigued playing in the heat, but I thought it was a good show." Cam Weaver had a line drive from the right box in the 23rd minute stopped with a leg save by Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. Jason Johnson let one go from inside the upper box in the 33rd minute, but Begovic made a diving save to keep it 1-0. Kenwyne Jones had Stoke Citys best opportunity in the 64th minute, but Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric made a diving save on Jones shot from outside the upper box. Barnes nearly upped the lead to 2-0 in the 69th minute, but his right-footed one-timer from 10 yards out on the right box just missed the far post. Cheap Warriors Jerseys . The AFL trade period is yet to begin but its already shaping as something of a bust for Fremantle and West Coast. The Eagles and Dockers will go into Mondays trade talks with no hope of luring their two priority targets - Melbournes Jesse Hogan and Greater Western Sydneys Rory Lobb - after the gun West Australians each signed contract extensions this week.Hogan was the great white hope for a Fremantle side desperate to secure a quality key forward, while Lobb shaped as a ready-made replacement for injured Eagles ruckman Nic Naitanui. While both Hogan and Lobb were motivated primarily by their prospects for success, the burden of flying interstate from Perth every second week during the season could have made a return home considerably less attractive.Fremantle champion Matthew Pavlich famously racked up almost 860,000 kilometres of air travel during his decorated 353-game career, more than double the kms collected by North Melbourne 432-gamer Brent Harvey. Its little surprise then, given the mental and physical toll of the travel, that Pavlich is the sole WA-based representative out of the 77 footballers to have played 300 or more VFL/AFL games. There are plenty of reasons why some trade bids dont succeed, including onfield performance, issues with team culture or simply a failure to provide the right currency. But the travel burden helps to explain why both Fremantle and West Coast have rarely secured trades for interstate players without roots in WA.Former Brisbane on-baller Jack Redden and journeyman ruckman Jonathan Giles - each born in SSouth Australia - are recent exceptions to the rule after joining the Eagles last year, while gun forward Josh Kennedy was born in Melbourne, grew up in WA and made his way to West Coast from Carlton as part of the Chris Judd trade in 2007.ddddddddddddEagles recruits Lewis Jetta, Elliot Yeo, Sharrod Wellingham, Jamie Cripps and Josh Hill are all originally from WA, as is Freo midfielder Harley Bennell. But, as shown by Hogan and Lobbs decision to stay put, hometown ties arent always enough to secure trades.Fremantle have also failed spectacularly in the past as they tried to prepare for life after Pavlich. They chased several key position players to no avail, the list including then Sun, Charlie Dixon. Essendons Cale Hooker, Richmonds Alex Rance and Geelongs Harry Taylor.West Coast have similarly come up short in their bid to lure coveted WA-born expansion club draftees Jaeger OMeara, Stephen Coniglio and David Swallow.I think youd be naive to think that the travel factor isnt a consideration, Dockers coach Ross Lyon said in 2014.For both WA-based clubs, the best bets are players actively seeking a trade over the Nullarbor.Fremantle are almost certain to recruit homesick Giants forward Cam McCarthy and Hawthorns Brad Hill, who is keen to play alongside brother Stephen, while the Eagles may throw a lifeline to Kangaroos veteran Drew Petrie, a former teammate of coach Adam Simpson and list manager Brady Rawlings.
