SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame tailback Josh Adams has tried to help set the tone in practice for the Fighting Irish as they prepare to face Duke following a disappointing loss that knocked them out of the playoff race.Thats what we can control is how hard we work and how fast we play. Thats something we can control, the 6-2, 220-pound sophomore said. Hopefully that affects everyone else by our example and our setting the tone as a group, other people will follow. When the Irish (1-2) faced Michigan State last week , Adams wore a jersey bearing No. 1, awarded each week to the player that coach Brian Kelly believes best represents the ideals of the program on and off the field. Kelly said Adams, the first underclassman to wear the jersey, earned the honor for the way hes worked since arriving on campus. Its been a championship level kind of work ethic. To have the all-time winning percentage for college football, you have to have players that are your best players. Also, theyve got to be your best workers. Hes one of clearly our best workers in practice. So he sets a high bar, Kelly said.Adams was expected to compete last season with fellow freshman Dexter Williams for playing time as the No. 4 running back. But after Greg Bryant left school because he was academically ineligible and Tarean Folston sustained a season-ending knee injury in the opening game, Adams emerged as the No. 2 back behind C.J. Prosise.Adams had four 100-yard rushing games, tying a school record for freshmen. He fell a yard shy of tying the school freshman record for yards in a game when he ran for 147 yards on 20 carries against Pittsburgh. A week later, he had the longest run ever in Notre Dame Stadium on a 98-yard touchdown against Wake Forest. He set the school freshman record with 835 yards rushing.Heading into the game against Duke (1-2), Adams is leading the Irish in rushing this season with 178 yards on 33 carries, although he has yet to score. Folston has rushed for 129 yards on 32 carries and quarterback DeShone Kizer has run for 126 yards on 32 carries. The rushing game struggled last week in the 36-28 loss to Michigan State, managing just 57 yards. Adams finished with 29 yards on 12 carries, although six of his seven carries in the first half were for three yards or more.Kelly said he wasnt disappointed in the Irish running game.I believe our running game is going to be where it needs to be. I think we made some mistakes and then never got in the kind of committed run flow in the second half that we needed to because we got down so quickly, he said.Adams said he is focused on becoming a better pass blocker. He failed to see a linebacker rushing in unblocked against the Spartans, leading to Kizer being sacked.Adams also is working on trying to break through the first tackle. Not getting tackled by one man is something you definitely have to pride yourself in in being a running back, he said. A running back makes a play out of nothing, so I definitely have to do a better job of that. Luka Doncic Jersey . Those lessons were more than enough to overwhelm the Utah Jazz. OXFORD, Miss. -- There was only one goal Saturday for the Mississippi Rebels and head coach Hugh Freeze. Our goal was to be 1-0 after this game. Goal accomplished, Freeze said after the Rebels snapped a three-game losing streak with a 37-27 win over Georgia Southern. The win didnt come easily for the Rebels (4-5, 1-4 Southeastern Conference), who were forced to overcome a 21-10 deficit after the opening 20 minutes. Quarterback Chad Kelly, who accounted for 249 yards of total offense and three touchdowns, hobbled off in the third quarter, favoring his right knee and ankle.Kelly, 16 of 23 for 233 yards passing, remained in the bench area in the fourth quarter and left the field without assistance after the game. He did not appear at the post-game press conference.I havent got a clue, answered Freeze when asked about Kellys status. He came back to the sidelines and he will get an MRI tomorrow. Well let our doctors look at it and they will let us know tomorrow.Kelly was the decisive factor in leading three consecutive touchdown drives in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Gary Wunderlich added field goals of 35, 29 and 38 yards as the Rebels had 441 yards of total offense.Akeem had a solid day. He was important as we managed the game after Kelly went out, Freeze said. I always want to see more, but Ive learned one thing this season and thats to celebrate the good times.Today was a good day for us.Freeze has spent most of the season watching the Rebels build big leads, only to see them disappear in the second half. Georgiaa Southern (4-5, 3-2 Sun Belt Conference) reversed the pattern, racing to the early lead before the Rebels rallied to gain control.dddddddddddd.Kevin Ellison connected with Myles Campbell on a 29-yard scoring pass before adding a 9-yard touchdown run. Campbell led all receivers with 121 yards on four receptions. Matt Breida scored on a 68-yard touchdown run to cap the early offensive outburst.Georgia Southern dropped their fifth game in the last six starts despite 401 yards of total offense. The option-based Eagles rushed for 267 yards, highlighted by Breida with 100 yards on 22 carries, but managed only two field goals in the second half. There are no moral victories by any stretch of the imagination, but I do think what you saw today was a vast improvement over the last time we played, Georgia Southern coach Tyson Summers said. I thought Kevin (Ellison) did a nice job managing the game through it all.THE TAKEAWAYOLE MISS: After an unsettling 20 opening minutes, the defense turned in an effective performance.
